Loreto Sanctuary

The Sanctuary of Loreto Holy House is a famous pilgrimage destination; here the Vergine lauretana is worshipped, patron saint of aviation. In the Holy House according to the tradition, The Virgin Mary was born and received the announcement of Jesus birth. According to the legend , in fact, in 1294 the walls of the house would have been transferred from Nazareth to Tersatto and finally to Loreto. From the studies carried out on the stones composing the Holy House, it is possible to realize that they are typical Palestinian stones, worked according to the technique used by the Nabatei, a population living near the Hebrews. The construction of the sanctuary, started in 1469 to protect the Holy House ended in 1587. The bell tower, drawn by Luigi Vanvitelli, was built in 1755. It is possible to assist to the main festivals around the 8th of September, in occasion of the Virgin Mary birth and around the 10th of December, period when the Holy House arrived in Loreto.
