Appennine abbeys

Appennine abbeys

Along the high part of Esino valley, near Gola della Rossa, in the area around Fabriano, numerous abbeys are part of the sorrounding landscape. The most important one is San Vittore delle Chiuse abbey, a municipality of Genga, founded at the end of the X century by the Longobards, building divided in two parts in Romanic style with Byzantine elements. Other worth visiting abbeys are San Biagio in Caprile, in the area of Campodonico di Fabriano, an old Benedictine monastery of 1030 almost entirely built in limestone, Santa Croce di Tripozzo abbey of the XI – XII century, in Sassoferrato, Santa Maria dell'Appennino abbey, the oldest among those situated between the mount Catria and the mount Cucco, located in a very suggestive place, Sant'Emiliano in Congiuntoli abbey, along the road for Arcevia towards Sassoferrato, of the X century, still preserving all its originary structure, San Salvatore di Valdicastro abbey, in the east part of Fabriano, in the wonderful nature landscape, Sant'Urbano abbey, in Apiro, founded by the Benedictine monks, typical model of Roman-Gothic art, Sant'Elena abbey, in Serra San Quirico, born in 1005 by San Romualdo, built in small blocks of stone, and, finally, San Cassiano di Valbagnola abbey, near Fabriano, dating back to the XI century.
